Quick Start

  • Buy movement consumables and collect any active XP buffs.
  • During Turbulent Timeways, build Mastery of the Timeways on levels 10-79.
  • Quest between queues if you are playing DPS.
  • At level 80, combine campaign, Delve, dungeon, Prey, and Renown quest XP.
  • At level 90, complete the event weekly for its Heroic cache.

Prerequisites

  • A level 10+ character and enough gold for optional movement consumables.
  • Optional shortcut only: a main with the Midnight campaign and relevant Warband unlocks can make the fastest alt route shorter, but neither is required to begin leveling.
  • Turbulent Timeways is temporary; after August 11, use the permanent quest-and-dungeon route and Chromie Time only when it is available to that character.

Priority:

Phase 1: Alt Leveling (10-90)

The fastest path from 10 to 90, with an event route and a permanent fallback.

1

Prepare Consumables and XP Buffs

High
Check the Auction House for Goblin Gliders, Gunshoes, and useful consumables. Take the Darkmoon Faire buff when available and enable War Mode only if the bonus outweighs time lost to PvP.
2

Choose the Permanent or Event Route

High
For a route that works year-round, combine efficient expansion quest hubs with the dungeon quests available to your character, using Chromie Time when the game offers it. During Turbulent Timeways (June 30-August 11, 2026), eligible level 10-79 characters can use Timewalking to build the Mastery of the Timeways XP buff separately on each character.
3

Levels 10-79: Build Mastery of the Timeways

High
While Turbulent Timeways is active, complete Timewalking dungeons to stack Knowledge of the Timeways:
Mastery of the Timeways: After 4 stacks, grants +30% XP from creature kills and quests.
Character-specific: Stacks and buffs are character-specific; every alt must build its own.
Role pacing: Tanks/healers get instant queues; DPS should quest between queues.
4

Levels 80-90: Use Midnight Quests and First-time XP

High
At level 80, transition immediately to Midnight zones:
First-time Delve quests: Award substantial bonus XP in Patch 12.1.
Dungeon quests & Prey: High-density XP spikes.
Campaign & side hubs: Combine with queue downtime instead of pure dungeon spam.
5

Use the Correct First-character or Alt Route

High
Your first character should complete the campaign and required unlocks. Alts should use available Warband skips and avoid replaying optional story chapters unless the XP route specifically benefits from them.
6

Follow an Optimized 80-90 Route

High
Harldan’s FollowTheArrow addon provides optimized Midnight routing and distinguishes a first character from later alts. Treat its timing as a route benchmark, not a guarantee: class mobility, queue time, competition, and War Mode all change the result.
7

Collect the Timewalking Weekly Reward

MedOptional
During the current Turbulent Timeways event, complete the weekly Timewalking quest at level 90 for a Heroic Cache of Quel’Thalas Treasures (item level 311-317). This turns the leveling event into an immediate gearing step for a fresh alt.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does the alt leveling loop take?

There is no reliable universal time. Tanks and healers can level very quickly through Timewalking during the event, while DPS characters should include questing between queues. The 80-90 time also depends on campaign skips and Warband unlocks.

Does this work for my first character?

Yes! The FollowTheArrow addon explains the specific nuances depending on if it is your first character leveled or an alt.

Do I still need to use professions or delves?

First-time Delve quests now award substantially more XP in 12.1, so they can be efficient when they align with your route. Profession first-crafts are optional rather than required.

When should I queue dungeons?

During Turbulent Timeways, queue repeatedly until Mastery of the Timeways is active. DPS characters should continue questing between queues; outside the event, prioritize dense quest hubs and dungeon quests.

Pro Tips & Recommended Addons

Pro Tips

  • Keep Goblin Gliders and Gunshoes available for indoor or no-mount segments, but compare their cost with the time they actually save.
  • Use FollowTheArrow as a route baseline, then adapt when queue times, class mobility, competition, or War Mode make another activity faster.
  • Enable War Mode only while its XP bonus outweighs time lost to PvP; turn it off if repeated fights slow the route.

Recommended Addons

  • FollowTheArrow: Highly optimized Midnight leveling addon by Harldan. Free on CurseForge.
  • TomTom: (Optional but helpful) For /way coordinates to find NPCs quickly if you still need them.
  • BugSack & BugGrabber: Highly recommended to catch and hide annoying UI errors during a new launch.
